The immune system can be described as our body’s defense mechanism against illnesses and diseases. Your body’s immune system function differentiates between the cells present in your body versus alien cells that could potentially harm you.
It is not a single organ in a body; instead, the immune system is made up of tissues, chemicals, proteins, and organs that work together to ward off invaders. Our immune system is made up of white blood cells produced in the bone marrow at its core.
With the ongoing pandemic caused by COVID-19, it has become imperative to protect ourselves by adhering to safety guidelines. However, boosting our immunity may also be a significant step in fighting COVID-19 or recovering from it.
There are ways you can boost your immune system to make sure it functions smoothly.

Get A Good Sleep
Having a good night’s sleep is essential for our bodies. It gives it time to recover and replenish its resources. The Sleep Foundation suggests varying hours for different age groups. However, 7 to 9 hours of sound sleep every 24 hours is the most common recommendation for the average adult.
Eat A Balanced Diet
A good diet is a source of nourishment for the immune system. Eating from all food groups is essential to maintaining certain levels of nutrients. Micro-nutrient deficiencies such as Vitamins A, C, B6, or E, including folic acid or zinc, may make the immune system susceptible to illnesses. As such, those with a poor diet have been found to fall sick more often. Intake of antioxidants and immune boosters such as turmeric and cinnamon are helpful.
Ward off Stress
Emotional, physical, or mental stress may turn into chronic stress over time. Ultimately, this affects the immune system. Stress can accelerate the production of the hormone cortisol, which can affect the body’s immune response. Chronic stress can also cause an anti-inflammatory reaction, which may help the immune system fight alien cells. However, it may also lead to chronic illnesses. Practice of meditation and mindfulness is very helpful.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
A healthy weight allows for the body’s organs to function effectively. Research suggests that the immune system and weight are directly proportional. A strong immune system may help in regulating bodyweight. While a healthy weight may defend one from heart diseases and cholesterol, both of which make the immune system weak.
Increase Water Intake
A suitable water intake helps in getting rid of toxins from our bodies. Not only this, but water intake helps in the production of lymph. Lymph is essential in carrying white blood cells from the bone marrow throughout the body. It also aids in digesting food, without which our bodies would not receive the required nourishment.
Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise can regulate the production of antibodies and white blood cells. White blood cells are essential to having a strong immune system and helping detect illnesses. It also slows down the production of stress hormones.
Keeping your immunity boosted with these tips should be a priority, especially when the world is going through a global health crisis. Keeping ourselves healthy will keep the burden off from the world’s healthcare system.
