The Vattikuti Foundation is a non-profit corporation that was founded in 1997. The Foundation serves both the local community in Southeast Michigan as well as causes in India and other parts of the world. Through the Vattikuti Foundation, Raj and his wife Padma continue to lend their support to a number of worthwhile charitable causes. The Foundation has distinguished itself by founding the Vattikuti Urology Institute at Henry Ford Hospitals and the Vattikuti Digital Breast Diagnostic Center at Beaumont Hospitals. The Vattikuti Foundation also focuses on creating an infrastructure to coordinate and reach out to the people who are in poverty through the Poverty Alleviation Initiative program in India.  Some of the most significant accomplishments in the field of Robotic Surgery have been a direct result of the Foundation funding research of Dr. Mani Menon at the Vattikuti Urology Institute of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan.  The Vattikuti name is associated with robotic surgery programs in the U.S., India, Belgium and the United Kingdom.  The Vattikuti Foundation Robotic Surgery Institute has a website which is the source of news, publications and a media library video collection of resources for robotic surgeons and students.  The Vattikuti Collective Quality Initiative is an ever-expanding program collecting robotic surgery data, fueling research worldwide to benefit surgeons and patients.  Dr. Mahendra Bhandari, noted Urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, is the C. E. O. of the Vattikuti Foundation, directing the efforts globally.  He is an ambassador for robotic surgery and travels often to guide and assist growing programs.

The Vattikuti Foundation is pleased to announce 2019 KS National Robotic Surgery Video Awards. Three Prizes worth of INR 100,000, 50,000 and 25,000 would be awarded for First, Second and Third Prizes, respectively.  The Awards competition is open to all Indian robotic surgeons.  The subject material of your video shall be on an aspect of robotic surgery.  Any specialty is welcome.  This is a nationwide contest, open to all Indian Robotic Surgeons / Fellows / Residents.

Dr. Mahendra Bhandari, CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Vattikuti International Outcomes Research Fellowship in Urology, to be held at the Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI) in Detroit, Michigan.  The VUI, home to the first robotic surgery program in the world, has produced many "firsts" in the science of Robotic Surgery.  The original announcement was only partially successful in generating applications, and due to other circumstances this Fellowship was put on hold until now.

Dr. Mahendra Bhandari, CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation has announced the 2019-2020 series of Vattikuti Fellowships.  Six one-year long Fellowships in Robotic Oncologic specialties will be awarded.  In addition, one Vattikuti International Fellowship is offered for research at the Vattikuti Urology Institute in Detroit, Michigan, and there will be two comprehensive two-weed long Fellowships to the ATLAS Program at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.

Two new Vattikuti Research Fellowship grants will be given for scientific research in India.

Call for abstracts for the Krishnaswamy Subramaniam (KS) National Robotic Surgery Video Awards

The Vattikuti Foundation is pleased to announce the December 2018 KS Robotic Surgery Video Awards.  Finalists will have an opportunity to present their videos at the upcoming XI Robotic Surgeons Council of India (RSC) December 1st & 2nd meetings, to be held at the Taj Vivanta Hari Mahal Hotel, Jodhpur.  This is a nationwide contest, open to all Indian Robotic Surgeons and Vattikuti Fellows.  The theme of the RSC will focus on Evidence Based Medicine.

The Vattikuti Foundation established the KS Robotic Surgery Video Awards to honor the memory of the late Shri Krishnaswami Subramaniam, who played a key role in the establishment of robotic surgery in India.  We invite robotic surgery professionals to send us abstracts of robotic surgery videos they would like to produce for this competition.  Abstracts must be submitted by Friday, September 14, 2018.

Though we are a little late publishing this, we want to share the news about our former Vattikuti Fellow Dr. Santosh Waigankar.  He was a Fellow with Dr. T. B. Yuvaraja at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, completing his term in October, 2016.  He let us know last March that he had received recognition from ERUS 2017 for his poster abstract entitled: “Pentafecta outcomes of robotic partial nephrectomy for T1b renal masses: Single institute-single surgeon retrospective analysis”.  This was awarded 2nd prize at the Junior ERUS-YAU meeting held on 25 September 2017, Bruges, Belgium. He received the prize from Dr. Geert De Naeyer,  OLV Hospital Department of Urology.

The immigration debate in the United States has reached stressful levels.  On July 4th, Independence Day in the US, David J. Skorton, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, contributed an Opinion piece in the USA Today national newspaper titled: "Immigrants helped build our nation,  We need to embrace them, not exclude them."

It was an impassioned discussion of the issue, from the standpoint of one whose ancestors were immigrants- as nearly all Americans can claim.  One of his examples hits very close to many of us at the Vattikuti Foundation: Dr. Mani Menon, Founding Director of the Vattikuti Urology Institute.  Here is the brief excerpt from the paper:

Please Note: Vattikuti Scholarship Applications are open until Thursday, March 1. There is less than one week left to apply for the Vattikuti Scholarships to attend the Robotic Surgeons Council of India (RSC.  These Scholarships are awarded to young surgeons within one year of earning- or- having earned- a MCI-recognized degree in a medical specialty currently using surgical robotics.  

Applications must include: Letter stating why the applicant wishes to attend thr RSC, what their goals are for using robotic surgery; CV, including current position and contact information; letter(s) of recommendation from professors or Medical Director/HOD.  Applicants must be within one year of earning their degree in a medical specialty.

Students selected will receive basic economy transportation to Mussoorie, double-occupancy lodging, and attendance to the two-days of RSC meetings.

Intuitive Surgical, manufacturer of various models of the da Vinci Surgical System, has sent email messages to registered members of their Online Community that there was a hack by "unauthorized parties" recently.  Member data was stolen, according to the email.  The data breach has since been repaired.  The Intuitive message warns members to be vigilant by using an email spam filter and to be cautious about clicking on unfamiliar email links.  

The Online Community is a resource the Vattikuti Foundation often recommends, because it is a valuable site to visit to learn about the various robotic surgery platforms produced by the company.   The site also features specialty-specific training modules (videos) for prospective robotic surgeons.
