At the March 2018 meeting of the Eauropean Association of Urology (EAU) Secretary General Prof. Chris Chapple honored Vattikuti Urology Institute Director Dr. Mani Menon with an Honorary Lifetime Membership. “We appreciate your contribution to urology over many, many years and wanted to acknowledge that,” Chapple told the EAU members gathered in Copenhagen.

Also honored:

Dr. Firas Abdollah, who received first prize for the best abstract by a resident-in-training for work on identifying the optimal candidates for adjuvant radiation therapy in post-prostatectomy patients with node-positive prostate cancer. 

VUI fellow Dr. Deepansh Dalela was awarded the EAU Hans Marberger Award 2018 for the best paper published in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Urology (the RCT paper on Retzius-sparing approach), along with a special invitation for the EAU International Friendship Dinner.  The award, annually given since 2004, is named after Prof. Hans Marberger to honor his pioneering achievements and contributions to endourology and the development of urologic minimally invasive surgical procedures.

We wish to add our heartfelt congratulations to our friends at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Health System for these fine accomplishments!

Please Note: Vattikuti Scholarship Applications are open until Thursday, March 1. There is less than one week left to apply for the Vattikuti Scholarships to attend the Robotic Surgeons Council of India (RSC.  These Scholarships are awarded to young surgeons within one year of earning- or- having earned- a MCI-recognized degree in a medical specialty currently using surgical robotics.  

Applications must include: Letter stating why the applicant wishes to attend thr RSC, what their goals are for using robotic surgery; CV, including current position and contact information; letter(s) of recommendation from professors or Medical Director/HOD.  Applicants must be within one year of earning their degree in a medical specialty.

Students selected will receive basic economy transportation to Mussoorie, double-occupancy lodging, and attendance to the two-days of RSC meetings.

James Catto, Editor-in Chief of European Urology has announced that research paper Multispectral Fluorescence Imaging During Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Sentinel Node Biopsy: A First Step Towards a Fluorescence-based Anatomic Roadmap has been selected as The Best Paper in Robotic Surgery Published in European Urology in 2017.  Dr. Nynke van den Berg, of the Interventional Molecular Imaging Laboratory, Department of Radiology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands;  Department of Urology, The Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital, Amsterdam, will be honored with the  EAU / Vattikuti Award for the Best Published Paper in Robotic Surgery in European Urology for 2017.

Robotic Surgeons Council of India deadlines for the May 5 & 6 2018 meeting


The time is approaching for the next Robotic Surgeons Council of India (RSC) meetings, to be held in Mussoorie on Saturday & Sunday, May 5 & 6, 2018.  We have established deadlines for Presentations, Vattikuti Scholarships and KS Robotic Surgery Video Awards materials:

Dr. Narmada P. Gupta and the Medanta Vattikuti Institute of Robotic Surgery are again offering an intensive week-long course in robotic radical prostatectomy surgery.  Called the Structured Skills Training Programme in Robotic Radical Prostatectomy, dry and wet lab training, skills simulator training, dual robotic console observation of live procedures, hands-on training, and study of procedure videos.  

Participation is limited to six surgeons, who will receive not only the training mentioned above, and will also learn proper docking, OR set-up, have lectures from guest and staff faculty, and training on how to utilize and manage the robotic OR staff and robot efficiently and safely.  US surgeon Dr. Vipul Patel is scheduled to demonstrate a case live via webcast (subject to availability).

A Wisconsin study looks into the possibilities of harvesting organs from patients with healthy organs, but facing imminent death from other medical causes.  It provides compelling reasons for not letting thse precious organs be left to die with the patient.  Our review is available with the link to the Medscape article inside.

The Vattikuti Foundation is pleased to announce two exciting new Fellowship opportunities in Robotic Surgery at one of India’s leading hospitals.  The deadline for Applications has been extended until Monday, February 19, 2018.

Two one-year Vattikuti Fellowships are now being offered:

1) Vattikuti Robotic Gynaecological Oncology Fellowship: MCI recognized postgraduate degree in Gynecology with minimum three years of working experience in Department or Division of Gynae oncology or MCh Gynecologic Oncology. Candidates with relevant super specialties will be preferred.

Web news service MedicalXpress has reported that the Netherlands Senate has approved a bill making all citizens over the age of 18 potential organ donors.  Citizens are able to opt out of the program by taking certain actions, but unless they do- in the event a person dies- and their relatives do not object- their useful organs would be made available to those who need them.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), located in Buffalo New York, has been at the forefront of cancer research for 120 years.  Many of our friends, Fellows, and Partner Surgeons have been there for training. Dr. Khurshid Guru has been there in a leadership role for many years and is currently serving as :Director, Robotic Surgery; Director, Applied Technology Laboratory for Advanced Surgery (ATLAS); Robert P. Huben Endowed Professor of Oncology; and Professor of Oncology.

This past January, RPCI formally changed their name to: Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a portion of their announcement states: "Our new mission and vision statement defines, with strength and clarity, why Roswell Park exists. We have one goal — to wipe cancer off the face of the earth."
